Tenterfield

Situated inland on the Queensland/New South Wales border in the New England Tablelands, the Tenterfield region is an area of spectacular national parks, alpine abundance and a rich history of disaster resilience.

The region was among the worst affected areas during the 2019/20 bushfire season. More than 40 homes and businesses were destroyed and thousands of hectares were burnt in the devastating fires, and the firefighting effort was hampered by the region’s lack of water following a long drought. For months after the bushfires, residents had to boil their drinking water due to the dangerously high turbidity levels in the Tenterfield dam caused by the drought and fires.

Karla McGrady is a Gamilaraay/Kamilaroi woman born in Tenterfield, now residing in Brisbane. She was encouraged to commence her profession as a self-taught artist with the influence of an artistic family and her cultural connections to art as a part of everyday life for Aboriginal people. Karla’s art is a mix of styles and ideas that have developed over the years.

“This piece depicts the landscape in the Tenterfield region, the granite mountains and boulders, freshwater creeks and significant places that hold stories and memories for Aboriginal people in the area.”
